Are you ready to remodel your bathroom, give your living room a facelift, or finally convert the garage into a guest suite? The thought of starting these projects may seem overwhelming so you look to hire a contractor to get the job done.
With lots of contractors to pick from, how do you choose the one perfect for your unique project? Here are a few things to consider when selecting a contractor for your home design and remodel project.
Talk to Them!
You want to choose a responsive contractor one that takes the time to listen, and above all is available should an issue arise during or after the project is completed. You want to be able to pick up the phone and trust the person on the other end is someone you are comfortable with.
At Elements in Design, our team takes the time to get to know you. There is no cookie-cutter approach here. We take our years of experience, and your vision/goal and transform your space. Best of all, we take on all the stress while keeping you in the loop every step!
Fun fact! Penny (the owner/principal of Elements in Design) is often the first person you will speak to. She started this company and loves making new friends with each phone call!
Check Past Work
Do they have a good reputation? Would their past customers recommend them for another job? Do a little research on the company to see what others (not just the people who work for the company) are saying. You can check the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Google or Social Media Review, Yelp, or even ask friends for a referral. Don’t rely on just what the company says about themselves, see what others say.
Have a Clear Plan
After meeting with a prospective contractor, if the company feels like a good fit for your needs it’s important to have a clear plan of action. This plan could include expectations, a timeline, a payment schedule, a project timeline, and more. Never assume what you shared is what they understood. Check and triple-check before you get started on a major project.
The good news is during the first consultation with Elements in Designs we talk through your vision, look at inspirational photos, and work to understand your needs. We can even help you brainstorm and think through the project. You don’t have to have all the answers, that is what our team is here to help with!
Don’t Let Price Be Your Guide
Cheapest is not always the best. When you select a contractor to work with, their quality of work and ability to complete the project is extremely important. But almost as important is to choose someone who communicates well, understands your needs, helps guide the project, and above all someone you are comfortable with. Don’t just select a company because they are the cheapest, make sure you are getting the whole package otherwise you may regret it down the line.
Contractor vs Designer
A contractor is not a designer and a designer is not a contractor. But together they make a dream team!
When remodeling or building new construction there are always surprises. You must have an experienced general contractor that can get through any issues that arise. However, you also want someone on your team with a trained eye for balance and aesthetics so a designer is a must! Make sure when meeting with a prospective company for your home construction project that they offer both a general contractor and interior designer to help guide and ensure your project will be completed successfully.
I’m excited to share that Elements in Designs checks all of these boxes and more. Our exceptional team of contractors and designers comes with 20+ years of experience. They have a string of past clients that wouldn’t hesitate to do another project and some that even consider us family!
We enjoy every new project we have an opportunity to be a part of. So if you are ready to dive into your next home remodel project give us a call! You will get to talk directly with Penny our principal interior designer and general contractor!
